I needed to try out the Bowens lighting on location ahead of a workshop I was working on so I got one of my models, Mairi Taylor along, and we headed up to a set of old wartime buildings north of Inverness with a burlesque costume theme. I love taking things out of their normal context, so placing the beautiful model in showgirl style costume, in what is basically a dump, really works for me. The contrast of beauty against something ugly is always a winner!
The Bowens Gemini lights are quite big and heavy, so the first observation was that I wouldn't want to be walking too far between car and shoot if I was to use these more regularly. Once the light is on a stand and a soft box attached, it becomes quite heavy but even though it wasn't particularly windy I had to find some ballast to place on the lighting stand to stop the whole thing toppling over and having an expensive accident.
