Hi, I'm Christopher 👋, a photographer based in Ryde, Isle of Wight, England, available for photography services across the surrounding areas.
I specialise in studio and landscape portraiture, with a particular interest in creating natural, authentic images that capture the essence of the person rather than relying on extensive retouching.
Self-motivation and a willingness to embrace new challenges are two of my strengths. I like to plan carefully, particularly when working in the landscape, while remaining flexible enough to abandon the plan when circumstances call for it. This approach also extends to my interest in street photography, where spontaneity is often key.
I'm naturally quiet, but I communicate well and enjoy building trust with people from all backgrounds. My previous careers have given me considerable experience in working with and understanding people, which I bring into my photography.
My portrait photography is designed to look natural and authentic, capturing personality, character, light, and shape with minimal reliance on heavy retouching.
My interest in photography began in 1959 when I was given a Kodak Brownie and a roll of 127 film. Although my involvement wasn't continuous, I returned to photography several years ago after becoming interested in life drawing. I was particularly fascinated by the way light and shape interact, which continues to influence my photographic work today.
I have no formal photographic training and have developed my skills through the guidance of friends and colleagues, together with continued professional development through the SWPP and SIFGP. I regularly attend Master and Super Classes with experienced photographers, including John Denton, Rick Friedman, and Trevor and Faye Yerby.
These experiences have encouraged me to become more creative in my approach while continuing to develop my technical skills. I have also greatly valued the willingness of established photographers within the SWPP to share their knowledge and experience.
I live on the Isle of Wight and regularly travel in pursuit of photography. I have recently begun entering British Photographic Exhibition (BPE) competitions and have already achieved acceptances for several images, with hopefully more to follow.
Photography is my fourth career, following roles in health service management, business and management lecturing, and consultancy on European Union projects across countries from the Baltic to the Balkans.
Away from the camera and computer, I enjoy reading and writing. Photography often finds its way into my writing too, including projects that have involved working with professional models to illustrate my work.
I would like to continue developing my photographic skills and, in particular, explore longer-term photographic projects that allow me to tell more considered and complete stories through a series of images.
