It started five years ago with a group of friends going out to Portugal for a week of fun in the sun, exploring light, taking pictures, and eating and drinking to excess.
Fast forward to 2017 and in September we'll be taking a group of 40-plus people over to Tavira on the Algarve for seven days of teaching, shooting, sharing and friendship.
We've come a long way since that first event and are a little more organised these days. We've moved base from up in the mountains to a beautiful complex of apartments in the village of Cabanas. It means that everyone has self-catering options as well as ready access to a selection of wonderful restaurants which at the time of year we visit are all happy to see some of the last tourists of the season and treat us royally. Only on the last night last year did we find the head waiter at our favourite eatery is also a professional retoucher too. We're looking forward to working with him in both his jobs this year.
It's been fantastic to welcome along Simon Burfoot for the last two years. The support The Flash Centre and Elinchrom give us has been amazing and it's always great to stress test their latest kit in the heat and intensity of the Algarve sunshine. This year we'll be taking the latest 1200watt kit with us and can't wait to put that through its paces.
This year Simon will be joined by Juliet and Terrie Jones from Societies' HQ. I cannot tell you how excited and grateful I am to have them joining us. I've been on many of their trips in the past but this is the first time I'm able to welcome them as my guests, to my gig and reward some of the support and trust they've placed in me over the years. They'll be supporting the week-long photography contest by giving a talk on the judging and marking process, image preparation and handing over the awards at our final-night dinner together. As well as the Societies'’ sponsored trophies there will be some tasty prizes from our other sponsors so competition will be fierce, but friendly. The best part of the trip for me is seeing photographers from around the world coming together, forming friendships and helping each other by sharing props, knowledge, kit and their time to help each other achieve.
There are 55 days to get ready for The Society of Photographers Convention and Trade Show at The Novotel London West, Hammersmith ...
which starts on Wednesday 15th January 2025
